1. INTRODUCTION
This file details the installation of the NetWare DOS IPX
workstation driver for the COMPAQ 32-Bit DualSpeed Token Ring
Controller.
2. FEATURES
1. Provides improved performance over previous releases of
the driver.
2. Supports Source Routing.
3. May be loaded into high memory.
4. Supports Microsoft Windows 3.0.
3. RELEVANT FILES
NWDOSIPX.DOC - This file
SCPQT416.OBJ - NetWare DOS IPX workstation device driver object
SCPQT416.LAN - NetWare DOS IPX workstation configuration file
MAC380.BIN - Controller download program image
4. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
This device driver requires:
* Any COMPAQ EISA computer with the COMPAQ 32-bit DualSpeed
Token Ring controller installed. The system must have
been configured using the COMPAQ EISA Configuration
Utility.
* NetWare workstation generation software. Either shgen.exe
or wsgen.exe can be used to generate the workstation
software with this driver. These programs are located on
the workstation services diskette included with the
NetWare system software.
5. INSTALLATION
In the following procedures, refer to your NetWare documentation
for information on installing DOS workstation drivers. To install
the device driver for the token ring controller, follow the
procedure that best serves your needs:
Floppy Diskette Drive Installation Procedure:
1. If you are installing NetWare Device Drivers from
diskettes, format a blank diskette with the volume label
"LAN_DRV_428". To this diskette, copy the following
files:
scpqt416.obj
scpqt416.lan
Note: For more information about the MS-DOS FORMAT,
LABEL, and COPY commands, refer to your MS─DOS
documentation.
2. Follow the instructions in the NetWare documentation to
configure and install a network IPX workstation shell
onto your workstation(s). At some point in the
installation you will be prompted to insert the diskette
labeled "LAN_DRV_???". Insert the diskette you prepared
earlier.
3. The NetWare workstation generation procedure creates an
IPX.COM file which contains the driver for the 32-Bit
DualSpeed Token Ring Controller. This file and the
NETx.COM file must be copied to your workstation fixed
disk or diskette. Refer to your NetWare documentation
on which files are required for the version of MS-DOS you
are using.
4. COPY THE MAC380.BIN FILE TO THE SAME DIRECTORY ON THE
WORKSTATION WHERE YOU COPIED THE IPX.COM FILE.
If you are unable to correctly load the device driver,
verify your Token Ring Controller(s) configuration by
running CHKTOK.EXE, found on the OPTION CONFIGURATION
diskette. To test your system hardware, run DIAGNOSTICS
Version 7.02 or later. Refer to the 32-Bit DualSpeed
Token Ring Controller Installation Card for more
information on using these utilities, or contact you
Authorized COMPAQ Computer Dealer.
Fixed Disk Drive Installation Procedure:
1. If you are installing the workstation drivers from a
fixed disk or network drive, create a subdirectory named
LAN_DRV_.428 on the same directory where the installation
program is stored. Copy to that subdirectory the
following files:
scpqt416.obj
scpqt416.lan
2. The NetWare workstation generation procedure creates an
IPX.COM file which contains the driver for the 32-Bit
DualSpeed Token Ring Controller. This file and the
NETx.COM file must be copied to your workstation fixed
disk. Refer to your NetWare documentation on which files
are required for the version of MS-DOS you are using.
Note: If you are installing NetWare from a fixed disk
or network drive, the drivers will be automatically
loaded from the LAN_DRV_.428 subdirectory.
3. COPY THE MAC380.BIN FILE TO THE SAME DIRECTORY ON THE
WORKSTATION WHERE YOU COPIED THE IPX.COM FILE.
If you are unable to correctly load the device driver,
verify your Token Ring Controller(s) configuration by
running CHKTOK.EXE, found on the OPTION CONFIGURATION
diskette. To test your system hardware, run DIAGNOSTICS
Version 7.02 or later. Refer to the 32-Bit DualSpeed
Token Ring Controller Installation Card for more
information on using these utilities, or contact your
Authorized COMPAQ Computer Dealer.
6. SOURCE ROUTING SUPPORT
Source routing is a method of routing data across multiple
networks through bridges. To enable the workstation to pass
data through a source routing bridge, the workstation must be
running the source routing program, route.com from Novell.
This program is necessary only if external source routing
bridges are present on the network. The source routing
program, file route.com, is available on the Novell NetWare
DOS Workstation Generation diskette. The Novell source routing
program and installation instructions are also available on
Compuserve NetWire under NOVA forum in library 8 (Novell
Patch/Drv'r) in the TRN050.ZIP file.
See the Novell NetWare documentation for more information on
source routing.
The following is an example of how to load source routing. The
following lines should be placed in the workstation
autoexec.bat file.
ipx
route
net3
7. HIGH MEMORY SUPPORT
The driver may be loaded into what is sometimes referred to
as "high memory". High memory is the memory located between
640K and 1Meg. The NetWare DOS IPX workstation driver is
compatible with programs such as COMPAQ runhi, QUALITAS
386max, or QUARTERDECK QEMM. All of these programs allow the
driver to be loaded into high memory. The primary advantage
of loading the driver into high memory is that it will free
up memory in the base 640K, thus leaving more memory available
to applications. The following is an example of how to load
the driver with COMPAQ runhi.
config.sys:
device = c:\dos\himem.sys
device = c:\dos\cemm.exe NOEMS
autoexec.bat:
runhi ipx
runhi net3
Notice the NOEMS option is being used on the command line for
cemm.exe. The NOEMS option will disable expanded memory. The
NOEMS option frees up more high memory, but its use may not
be advisable if you are using applications that require
expanded memory.
8. NETWIRE
The NetWare DOS IPX driver files for the COMPAQ 32-Bit
DualSpeed Token Ring Controller reside on Compuserve NetWire
under NOVA forum in library 11 (or library 17 for new uploads)
in the CPQTR2.ZIP file.
